From The Principal
Mothers love us - our tears, our anger, our fears, our defences and our insanity, our joys, our hopes and our defencelessness.
I once asked my mother why she loved me no matter what I did or said. She simply responded - "Because I do." My grandmother was also a very strong figure and was a significant adult in my childhood through to my early adult years.
To me they were both just total love – wrapped warm and secure around family. Both very nurturing and both very humble.
Generally, we grow and become the people we are because of the selflessness, example and infinite depth of love that mothers and grandmothers show us.
There are immeasurable ways to be a mum. No one can be the mum you are - the wonderful, caring mum who is loved for who you are and how you are!
Our perfect model of motherhood is our Eternal Mother Mary. She gave birth to Jesus in total humility in a barn, she supported and encouraged him throughout challenging ministry, loved him and stood beside him as he died on the cross for all of humanity and prayed for his resurrection with a gentle and quiet spirit. Thank-you to all the mums, grandmothers, aunties and parishioners who share their love in so many ways to all of the students, teachers, support staff and other parents at St Anne's Catholic Primary School.
We hope you all have a wonderful day this coming Sunday; filled with laughter, hugs, kisses and cuddles.
Principal's Messages
SCHOOL UNIFORM | Since returning this Term 2, it has been noticed that a number of students are not wearing the correct shoes or socks, together with inappropriate haircuts and jewellery. The wearing of a school uniform at St Anne's encourages the development of a strong sense of identity, both within the school and the wider community. It encourages a sense of equality and of personal dignity. Parents your role is to ensure that your children are dressed correctly.
SICK STUDENTS | Term Two always sees a higher number of students with flu like symptoms and other ailments. If your children are unwell through the night or before school, please keep them home until they recover. We fully appreciate that parents don’t wish their children to miss school, but many illnesses are easily passed on between children and spread quickly. Please keep the wellbeing of other children and staff in mind when deciding whether or not to send unwell children to school.
PREP ENROLMENTS | Enrolments for Prep are currently being taken for the 2024 school year. If you have a child due to commence Prep next year born between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019, please complete an online enrolment form, available on our school website -
https://www.sasrok.catholic.edu.au/
It is important that this is done promptly so that the number of available positions for new families can be determined.
If you know of anybody seeking enrolment in Prep for 2024, please encourage them to head to our website for further information. If you have any queries or concerns regarding this process, please contact the office.
ALL ENROLMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED ONLINE: Once enrolment applications have been received and processed by our Administration staff, you will be notified of an interview time during Term 2.
SCHOOLTV - The State of Youth Mental Health | Parents and carers can play a crucial role in their children's mental health. As a result, staying informed on the current state of youth mental health is vital, as it not only affects individuals, but also families and communities. According to recent research, the frequency of mental health disorders among young people is increasing, with anxiety, depression, and self-harm being among the most common challenges. One of the reasons being attributed to this rise is the heightened stress and anxiety that many young people face in today's society. Academic success, social media, and family issues are all influencing factors. Many young people are still suffering the long-term consequences of the pandemic, such as social isolation, uncertainty, and loss. Parents can play an important role in their children's mental health. Creating a safe and open environment for your children to talk about their emotions, thoughts, and feelings is vital. Encouraging healthy habits like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and proper sleep can help reduce their stress levels and boost your child's overall mental health. There are also many resources and services available to children, adolescents, and their families, such as school counsellors, various mental health organisations, support lines, and of course, mental health professionals. It is important to remember that seeking help is a show of strength, not weakness, and that early intervention is critical in addressing young people's mental health difficulties. This edition of SchoolTV, discusses some of the major mental health issues affecting young people and how to support a child experiencing them. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

National Walk To School Day- 19th May
Why do we celebrate National Active travel initiatives such as Ride to School and Walk to School Day? To encourage children to become more physically active!
In recent correspondence from our Mackay City Council, advertising what they can do to help mark this calendar date, it stated that many Australian children aren’t getting enough physical exercise every day and that choosing an active way of getting to school can make all the difference to this.
50 years ago, 80% of children walked or cycled to school. Today, that figure has dropped to just 20%. The annual Walk To School Day has an important part to play in reminding children and parents that there are other options than being driven to school, and showing children how much fun riding, walking, scooting and skating can be! Having a dedicated event like this is a way of normalising getting to school in an active way, and entire schools and communities can get involved.
What are the benefits of riding or walking to school?
It helps children get enough exercise! It reduces pollution! It improves children’s health and wellbeing! It helps children learn about road safety!
It’s fun!
We will assemble at the Field Of Dreams at 8.10am, and begin our walk at 8.15am. We will follow the paths past the diner and up towards the school. If it is raining, we will postpone to a future date.
The Mackay City Council have very generously donated funding for a simple breakfast after our walk. Thank you, Mackay City Council for this support!
Breakfast Club Volunteers!

Breakfast Club Has Started!
This morning, we were able to host our first breakfast club meal, and we couldn't have done this without the generous support of our school community. Using donations of cereal, long life milk, cups, bowls and spoons, Matilda and her crew of helpers were able to give breakfast to those who needed it this morning.
At this stage, 'Breakfast Club' will run each Monday morning until the holidays. We will look again at the need when we return to school. Any donations, particularly spoons, bowls, cups and long life milk, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your support of this worthy cause. We couldn't have done it without the assistance of people from our community.
Reporting To Parents And St Anne's Semester 1 Report Cards.
During 2022, a document titled 'Reporting to parents and carers on student achievement in Prep - Year 6: Guidelines to inform practice' was released by our Catholic Education Office. This document is designed to bring consistency throughout our schools when writing and publishing report cards.
Report cards are issued at the end of Term 2 and Term 4. Our teachers are currently in an assessment period, finalising pieces of assessment and collating work completed during the semester. Our teachers then use professional judgment, and the achievement standard for their year level, to assign a mark for Semester 1.
There has been a small change to our report cards in Year 1 and 2. Previously, our report cards in these year levels have included a scale that used Very High-High-Sound-Developing-Support Required. This has changed to an A-E scale, bringing these year levels in line with the remaining year levels. The Prep report card reporting scale has remained the same.
If you require any further information on our reporting change, or report cards in general, please do not hesitate to ask!

ANZAC DAY LITURGY

Thank you to the Year 3 students, Miss O'Farrell, Mrs Chapman and Miss Cameron for leading our ANZAC Day liturgy. These students led the school wonderfully in reading, singing and bringing forward ANZAC symbols. Some special guests joined the commemorations, including Commodore Colin Dagg of the Royal Australian Navy, the Honourable Michelle Landry MP, Federal Member for Capricornia, and Michael Ford and Sharon Price from the Sarina ANZAC day committee. We thank them for their presence. Commodore Dagg made comment on how reverent and respectful the students were during the liturgy when he addressed the school. Well done St. Anne's!
ANZAC DAY MARCH

Thank you to students and staff for coming along to march as a school at the Sarina ANZAC Day Parade. It was fantastic to see so many families commemorating ANZAC Day. Following the parade was a service where School Captain, Ahlara read the Fourth Uniform Resolution and captains Clare and Carter laid the wreath on behalf of our school.
Confirmation and First Eucharist
If your child has completed the Sacrament of Reconciliation, they are now eligible to complete their journey towards Confirmation and First Eucharist.
I will be conducting workshops over terms 2 and 3 to prepare children for Confirmation and First Eucharist. These will be held in the Parish Centre at St. Michael's Church.
I have emailed families whose children completed the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the end of 2022 with a short Google form to complete. If you are wanting to enrol your child and they have completed Reconciliation previously, please email Erika_Milne@rok.catholic.edu.au
More information about workshops and dates will be sent in the next few weeks.

Finance News

If you have an existing concession card registered at St Anne’s and have more than one student, please contact Sandra Adams to confirm that discounts have been applied to each student.
Term 2 Fees | Term 2 school fees have now been issued. Please check your emails for your invoice. If you foresee any issues with paying by the due date, and do not already have a payment plan in place, please contact our Finance Officer to discuss options.
Sports News
PE in Term 2
This term we embark on training for our school Athletics Carnival which will be held in week 9 of the term on Friday 16th June.
Each week in PE, classes participate in activities to develop their skills in both Track and Field sports. Week 1 saw each class learn or revise Shot Put techniques and Race starting. Please ensure your child brings their hat to school each day, we will be working on the oval most weeks this term.
Due to the 'high risk' category of some field sports, parents in Yrs 4-6 will be required to give consent for students to participate in both Discus and High Jump. Please refer to the Google Form which has been emailed to all families.
District Sports
Congratulations to the many St Anne's students who attended Sarina District Cross Country trials at the Sarina Golf Course last term. The track is always tough, those hills are killer. Every student put in their absolute best efforts. We are so proud of you all!
The following students have been invited to run in the Mackay trials on Friday 28th April.
Bella R, Tahlia F, Hudson V, Riley G and Carter R.
Congratulations to Noah G for trialling at Sarina District Football (Soccer) trials on Monday. Noah has been selected on the team to trial at Mackay district on 9th May. We wish you all the best Noah!
Run Club
We all know healthy habits start young! Run club is an opportunity for children (and adults) to participate in running in the fresh morning air before school. Meet on the oval at 8am each Tuesday, ready to run! Each week we will incorporate some games into running short and long distances.
Rugby League
Once again, St Anne's are combining with Alligator Creek State School to participate in the Don Grobe Plate which is a primary school Rugby League competition for all Mackay and surrounding schools. Thanks to Mrs Gibson for managing the team. Good luck in your first game this Wednesday afternoon!
Netball
We have three teams entered into the Sarina & District Netball competition this year. The new courts are beautiful, and all players are excited to play their best. Your support is always encouraged, we would love to see you courtside on Thursday afternoons!

Sarina District Cross Country

St Anne's Rugby League Team
On Wednesday the 3rd of May, year 5 and 6 students from St Anne’s combined with Alligator Creek State School to play our first Mackay District Interschool Rugby League Game. Although we were defeated against Andergrove State School, the players had fun, never gave up, and finished the game with a smile on their faces. It was great to see new friendships being made between St Anne’s and Alligator Creek as they tried to learn names at half time. Congratulations to those students who played their very first game of football. Well Done!
Until next game,
Mrs Gibson
