From The Principal
The Gospel from yesterday provides many challenges for me. Fr Don, in his homily provided many insights to aid my understanding and provided a modern-day context of when he was studying and living in Rome. The Dominicans, with whom he studied, are well known for their outreaches of mercy. Something to which we aspire here at St Anne’s Catholic Primary School. One of these incredible acts sees them working with prisoners who are near the end of their term behind bars; they are granted one day a week out so that they can assimilate to life on the outside. Dr Don reported that in undertaking such a venture there was a major risk that they would find their way back to the people who had gotten them into crime in the first place. The Dominicans, in their wisdom and outreach have devised a program where they welcome the prisoners to their monastery for that one day of the week to assist them in learning new skills. Hopefully this sharing of the mercy of God is enough to get them through the very real and difficult times they face when leaving prison.
The Gospel of the day gives me an insight into how difficult life was for people back then; particularly this Gospel highlights the plight of the tax collectors who by their very occupation were on the outside of society. The tax collector in this Gospel knows his life is a mess – but there is always hope of a better life and a brighter future. This is what the Dominicans are doing in their modern-day outreaches.
If we want to see changes in the world it must begin with us – what is your piece of this narrative?

The Good News
Sunday's Gospel Reflection

This week’s Gospel passage flows on directly from last week’s Gospel and continues the teaching of Jesus about prayer.
Whereas the preceding passage emphasised the need for persistence in prayer, this passage is about the way in which we come before God in prayer. It is the tax collector, whose simple prayer is ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner,’ who goes home at rights with God. In this simple prayer, the tax collector recognises that he is not in right relationship with God and asks for God’s mercy. This is a hallmark of the lowly and outcast in the gospel of Luke: they recognise their need and seek God’s forgiveness and mercy.
The model of faith that is depicted over and over again in this gospel is the one who recognises their need for God’s loving mercy and asks for it.
We are repeatedly reminded that God’s mercy, forgiveness and abundant love are constantly out-flowing towards us and all we have to do is humbly desire and welcome them.
