St Mary of the Cross
This week the Commonwealth Games ended. Yes, Australia did well but we have also seen varying responses to success and misfortune. We know both happen in our lives and we are all on learning curves in relation to both. This week we celebrated the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and certainly this woman can be a model to us regarding success and failure. One of the things I love best about this saint is the way she related to her family. Hers was dysfunctional yet she lived, loved and flourished within that family. She knew love from both her parents but she also knew the pain and confusion of parents who separated. She loved her father dearly and recognised the good he had given her even though, in his impracticality, he failed to provide for the family and she, at the age of 14, had to go to work to support them. She learnt early to be realistic and loving – she had a hard head and a soft heart.
If we look at situations too narrowly – “I must win the gold medal to be a success”; “my family should always get along,” we will be overwhelmed by failure. We need to widen our understanding so that we can learn from all that happens. An athelete learns so much from his or her training. We learn how to truly love in the midst of family tensions. Indeed, we learn how to be a success as a person by how we handle failure.
Loving Jesus, your life here on earth looked like a failure – tortured to death, deserted by friends and followers - but God made it the way of salvation. Inspire our hearts when we feel overwhelmed by our weakness and failure and let us trust that you will work all for good. We ask this in your name, confident that you will hear us.

Road Safety Week & Walk To School Day
QLD Road Safety Week
The Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Queensland Police Service host Queensland Road Safety Week each year in August. This year, QLD Road Safety Week is 22-26 August 2022 with the theme Road safety starts with me. This is a great opportunity to promote the importance of road safety to our school communities throughout Queensland.
Sadly, road trauma is a leading cause of death of Queensland children and youth. As a community, young people need our support and guidance to keep safe on and around roads while they are still developing the cognitive, sensory and physical skills required to be safe road users.
To do this, we’re asking students to wear YELLOW to school on Friday 26th August and join us in a WALK TO SCHOOL DAY on Friday morning. Students will have the opportunity to participate in road safety activities throughout the week and learn more about what road safety starts with me means for them.
We hope that together, we can shine a light on road safety and lay the foundations for a generation of safe road users.
WALK TO SCHOOL DAY (Fri 26th August)
Meet at ANZAC Park (Rotary Lions Park) from 8:10am
Leave at 8:20am
Walk over the railway line
Cross the road at Grandma’s Place
Use school crossing and walk to school.

The Good News
Sunday's Gospel Reflection

Sunday's Gospel reading begins with the promise of the greatest treasure – the Kingdom of God. Jesus says real treasure is the kind that never wears out. We never have to worry about being robbed. We don’t need an armored car or a bank vault to hold this kind of treasure; the best place to store it is in our heart. ‘Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be.’
The rest of the Gospel reading calls on us to be ready for God.
One example describes wide-awake servants who are well prepared for the master. No thief will break into this house. ‘The Son of Man will come when you least expect him.’ Peter didn’t quite understand, so Jesus tried again. Once again, servants are used as examples. The busy servant is fortunate. The lazy one, who abused privileges and didn’t worry about the master’s return, ends up with a beating. ‘When much has been given ... much will be required.’
Sunday's Gospel urges us to live our life as if Jesus is about to arrive at any minute.
We must take responsibility for our actions; be ready and be faithful.

Feast of St Mary of The Cross MacKillop - Monday 8th August
Mary MacKillop was born in 1842 in (Fitzroy) Melbourne (Australia). On 8 August 1909.she died, having suffered a disabling stroke in 1902. Inspired by a meeting with Fr. Julian Tenison-Woods, Mary MacKillop at the age of 25 took her vows and the religious name, “Mary of the Cross”. In doing so, she founded the congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph. Soon after taking her religious vows, Mary MacKillop began schools.
Within 5 years of taking her vows and founding the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Mary had established over 30 schools, in South Australia and over 100 women had joined the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
Mary MacKillop was very conscious of the plight of the poor and needy. She worked with families that lived in isolated areas of Australia. As a result, Mary MacKillop pioneered a new form of religious life in Australia and commenced a “system” of “Josephite" schools that would provide education, especially for the children of the poor. In 1873, Pope Pius IX gave Papal approval for the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Even today, many Australians can say that they too have felt the impact of the enormous work started by St. Mary of the Cross (MacKillop), having been educated or cared for, by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. She was noted for her trust in the providence of God and miracles of healing have been attributed to her.
She was declared a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI on the 17th October 2010.
O God, source of all goodness,
who have shown us in Saint Mary
a woman of faith living by the power of the Cross,
teach us, we pray, by her example
to live the gospel in changing times
and to respect and defend
the human dignity of all in our land.
Through our Lord.
All: Amen

As part of our school priorities for 2022 and now that larger gatherings can take place, St Anne's will be holding student led assemblies commencing in Week 5.
The purpose of the assemblies is for the students, with the support of the teacher and teacher assistants, to showcase what they have been learning in class and also lead the Friday assembly prayer. All parents, caregivers and community members are most welcome to attend.
Our school assemblies are held on Friday mornings commencing at 8:40am in the school hall.

Reef Guardian Fundraiser
In class, 4HC have been learning about the Reef Guardians and the importance of looking after the Great Barrier Reef and its animals.
Pope Francis asked Catholics to take care of the planet and look after the environment.
Therefore, on Friday the 12th of August our class is having a fundraising event at lunchtime to raise awareness and money as Reef Guardians. This money will go towards adopting a whale and a dolphin from Sea World’s Research Centre. Which will help to protect God’s creatures.
We thank you for your support as we teach our students the importance of looking after our beaches, waterways, and wildlife.

Finance News

St Michael's Parish News
Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion
Congratulations to Zoe, Dustan, & Lucas, along with other candidates from St Michael's Parish, who made their sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. They have now fully initiated members of the Catholic church. The candidates have been preparing for the sacraments through completing workshops with the support of their family and reflecting on what it means to live a Christ filled life.
Thank you to Bishop Michael and Father Gasper for presiding over the sacraments along with the Parish of St Michael's for your ongoing prayers and support for these candidates. Thank you to everyone involved in the celebration!

Staff Soccer
On Sunday the 17th July St Anne’s staff played a round robin Women’s 6 a side Soccer Carnival at Sarina Saints Soccer Ground. We had a very enjoyable day. We lost the first 3 games but won the last game. We did not end up with the wooden spoon, so we were very proud of ourselves.

Student Leadership
Leadership is a quality that all students of St Anne's Catholic Primary School are encouraged and supported to develop. These experiences ensure that students perceive themselves as leaders and have the opportunity and confidence to take on leadership roles and find their voice.
