From The Principal
A STORY ABOUT LIFE | My Grandmother always cooked tasty food. But one day, she put a burnt pie in front of my Grandpa. Not just a little burnt, but black as coal. I waited to see what my Grandpa would say. But he just ate the pie and asked how my day was.
Then I heard my Grandmother apologize to him for his dinner. I'll never forget his response, it was so profound. "Dear, I like your pie." Later, I asked him if he had told the truth. He put his arm on my shoulder and said, "Your Grandma had a tough day at work. She was very tired. The burnt pie didn't harm me but, a sharp word could've hurt her."
We all make mistakes. We shouldn't focus on mistakes but, support those we love. ~Unknown Author
Yesterday, the Catholic Church in Australia celebrated World Communications Day, the Sixth Sunday of Easter. Pope Francis' message this year focuses on the importance of 'Listening with the ear of the heart'. This is exactly what grandpa did in the above story; if we all did this better, I believe we would create an amazing ripple effect and a better world.
In his message, the Pope speaks of the temptation to speak without listening, as well as the tendency to hear people speaking but not actually listen to them.

COVID-19
VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE | St Anne’s Catholic Primary School wishes to advise you that, during the past week, we have been notified of positive cases of COVID-19 in our school community.
St Anne’s regularly consults with the Catholic Education Office and relevant authorities, and continues to follow the advice of Queensland Health regarding cleaning requirements.
As COVID-19 remains active in our community we ask you to continue to monitor your child’s/children’s health and if they develop any flu-like symptoms:
- Keep your child/children at home
- Seek a PCR or Rapid Antigen test where it is recommended and notify the school of positive results. Please be aware, a negative COVID test does not change the requirement to be symptom free to attend school.
- Follow the advice of Queensland Health
As we continue to navigate the pandemic, please remind your child/ren to:
- maintain good hand hygiene at all times
- cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of their elbow and dispose of tissues in the bin immediately.
- practice social distancing from others where possible
- wear masks when required
Please also inform us if any of our students contract COVID-19 as a result of being first placed in isolation.
We will continue to work closely with health authorities to keep our school community informed of any developments and advice. Thank you once again for your ongoing support.

Across The Curriculum

Buy Smart Program
We all have to make decisions about how we spend our money—and what we buy—almost every day of our lives. The Office of Fair Trading runs the Buy Smart Competition to help you learn about marketplace issues and your rights to become more informed consumers.
By becoming an informed consumer, you will have the skills and knowledge to recognise and avoid scams, improve your financial capability and use your consumer rights when you need them.
The Buy Smart Competition is a way to get you thinking about these issues in a fun, creative way and have the chance to win a share of over $15,000!
Year 4 – Year 6 students are invited to make a creative project, which could be just about anything to do with being a consumer. Some of the awesome projects in the past have included board games, music videos, interactive quizzes, apps and much more.
The closing date for the 2022 Buy Smart Competition is Friday 16 September.
If this is something you would be interested in competing in independently, with a partner or in a small group, please email tahlia_lymbey@rok.catholic.edu.au so we can begin our entries.

Premier's Reading Challenge
The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is an annual, statewide initiative for Queensland schools and students from Prep to Year 9 from May 9 to 26 August 2022. It aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning by being giving opportunities for children to experience and record a range of books for the duration of the challenge.
Experiencing a book includes classroom or at home activities such as shared reading, listening and reading along with a book, or being read to.
Each student will be given a reader's record sheet to note down the books they have read. Prep-Year 4 students are encouraged to experience up to 20 books and Year 5 and 6 students 15 books, as they are likely to select longer, more complex books that may take them longer to read.
Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability. While there is no compulsory reading list for the challenge, a display will be set up in the library with books at appropriate reading levels available to help students, teachers, parents and guardians during this challenge.
925 schools, 350 centres and individual readers who took part in the 2021 challenge, combining more than 168,000 Queensland children and students reading over 2.39 million books! Schools with 100% participation go in the running to share $10,500 worth of Booktopia book vouchers!

The Good News
Sunday's Gospel Reflection

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus bids farewell to his disciples and promises to send them the gifts of peace and the Spirit. Jesus speaks again about the closeness of his relationship to the Father.
Jesus’ words come from the Father, and those who love Jesus love the Father. By promising to send the Holy Spirit, Jesus assures the Apostles that they will not be alone.
The Father sends Jesus, who sends the Holy Spirit. The Spirit continues the teaching of Jesus and guides the Apostles in their ministry.
Jesus also gives the peace above all understanding. This is a peace no one can take from us.
Loving God, we thank you for all the blessings you give us. Send your Holy Spirit to guide us in the way of your Son Jesus. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sports News

YOU for 2032
Queensland Representative School Sport wish to advise you about the Queensland Academy of Sport’s state-wide talent identification opportunity that could potentially see students on a pathway to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.
This program is called Youfor2032 and is designed to unearth the next generation of elite Queensland athletes who have the potential to win on the world stage, including the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
There are up to 15 Olympic and 8 Paralympic sports looking to match their best coaches with Queensland’s best talent. It doesn’t matter if students have experience in any of these sports. Athletic ability coupled with a great attitude and supportive parents or guardians are the key ingredients needed to excel in this program.
Those successful in being selected for Youfor2032 will receive expert training, coaching and development support, from State and National Sporting Organisations as well as the QAS.
This could be the first step in an incredible journey for our students.
Visit the program website for more information:

Newsletter Report By Lilly | Over the past two weeks, our year 3 and year 5 students completed Naplan for 2022. I would like to congratulate them on their efforts and hard work. Thank you to all staff involved in helping our students achieve their best results!
Lately, I have been seeing many students running on the concrete. With the amount of wet weather, we have had, it is very important to not run and follow your teacher’s instructions. Their job is to keep us safe. Your job is to follow the rules!
A big congratulations to Miss Lymbery, on her new acting role as APC – you will do great in this role. Also, a big welcome to Mrs Gill as our part time Year 6 teacher.
I hope you had a great week, and remember to always listen to your teacher!
