Sunday's Gospel Reflection - John 6:24-35
Jesus is the bread of Life
This week’s gospel reading continues the exploration of John Ch 6 that began last week and will continue for another few weeks. Today’s passage begins the extended discourse on the ‘Bread of Life’ image that runs throughout this chapter. Last week’s reading finished with Jesus virtually fleeing the scene when the crowd wanted to make him king.
At the start of today’s reading, the crowd has caught up with him again and appears to be looking for a repeat performance of the miraculous feeding. Jesus accuses them of simply wanting more food and not being alert to the truth of the sign they had witnessed. The crowd asks what they must do to accomplish the works of God and Jesus answers fairly bluntly, Believe in me!
In response, the people demand a sign from Jesus: produce manna from heaven as Moses did during the Exodus. In fact, manna from heaven is one of the signs of the coming of the Messiah that is foretold by the prophets. So, in their own way, the people are asking Jesus to demonstrate to them that he is the Messiah. Jesus, however, explains that it was not Moses who produced the manna, but God.
In Jesus, God has already produced the sign – the Bread sent down from heaven. There is no need for Jesus to produce such a sign; the sign has already been produced by God. It is up to the people – and us – to recognise God’s gift of life-sustaining nourishment that is Jesus.
In the Eucharist, we continue to celebrate Jesus as the Bread of Life – the sustaining gift of God that ‘gives life to the world’.
Christ is present in the Eucharist in many forms: in the people gathered; in the celebrating priest; in the Word proclaimed; and in the consecrated bread and wine – the Body and Blood of Christ.
In relation to receiving Christ through the reception of communion, St Augustine wrote, ‘Be what you see, and receive what you are.’ We not only receive the Body of Christ through Eucharist, we are called to be the Body of Christ because of what we have received; and we receive the Body of Christ because we are already part of the Body of Christ.

Making Jesus Real
During the week, I learned that Nataya in Year 5 has managed to raise $600 for CQ Rescue by making gratitude packs during Kind July. She made the baths salts from roses petals and lavender with essential oils (with supervision from Mum😉) and helped do the special message with the gratitude stone. Great work Nataya! The spirit of Jesus is alive in you!
Jesus calls us to give of ourselves - our time, our talents, our presence. These actions are a great reminder of how we can follow his example to make the lives of those around us better.

News from St Michael's Parish
At Sunday Mass, students from St Anne's received the Sacrament of Confirmation along with other candidates from the parish. Thank you to the sponsors, parents and families for your prayerful support of the candidates. Thank you to Fr Don for leading the mass and for your pastoral leadership.
Confirmation is the second Sacrament of Christian Initiation. The Bishop, as leader of the diocesan Church community (or his delegate) administers confirmation. Through the Laying on of Hands and Anointing with Chrism our baptismal commitment is confirmed.
Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit – wisdom and understanding, counsel and fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord – we are strengthened to live more truly and responsibly as disciples of Jesus and members of the Church committed to pursuing the mission of Jesus.
Very soon, preparation will begin for the Sacrament of First Eucharist. This is final sacrament of initiation in the Catholic Church. We continue to pray for our candidates and their families on their sacramental journey.

Thank you to our students, parents, families and parishioners who joined with us for our Feast Day celebration on Thursday. A big thanks to our friend, Fr Ashwin, for leading the celebration of the Eucharist.
Have a great week! God's love, peace and blessings,
Stuart.
