T3 W2 Newsletter 2021
From The Principal
Whilst I haven’t caught up with many of you just yet, I do hope that you had an enjoyable break from early morning routines and that this last holiday period was a special time for you and your family, hopefully creating memories. These holidays saw us attending to some overdue jobs at home with the assistance of many family members. Doing jobs this way seemed to make it more of a social occasion rather than hard work, even if we did work into the night on many occasions.
A quick look ahead at term 3 would suggest that we will be busy once again and as usual there are many activities planned for what will be an exciting ten weeks ahead. We look forward to such highlights as Challenge Cup, the Mackay District Athletics Carnival, NAIDOC Mass and celebrations, Catholic Education Week, Feast Day Celebrations, Mackay Eisteddfod, Father’s Day to name just a few.
We extend a very special welcome to Miss Fiona O’Farrell who has been appointed to St Anne's as year three teacher. We welcome Fiona to St Anne’s and know that each and every one of you extend that warm trademark welcome for which we are known. Welcome Fiona, we know that your time with us will be wonderful!
Joining us for the next ten weeks is Nikita Allen, from Central Queensland University who is completing two of her practicums with us. Nikita is a former STA student!!! We wish Nikita all the very best in her chosen vocation and are sure that she will experience many enriching and wonderful moments over the coming weeks. Nikita is completing her placement in year 1W.
Last week, if you had the chance of bringing your children to school you will have noticed some changes. The fence alongside the hall has been upgraded and we sincerely thank Bendigo Bank Community Bank Sarina for their major, major part in this refurbishment. Doesn’t it look great?
As well you will have noticed that four pencils welcome you as you walk in and farewell you as you leave. As you enter you are welcomed by the Yuwi word for welcome, “Ngandadyi” and as you leave you are farewelled by the Yuwi word for farewell, “Garrmbu”.
This week as we celebrate NAIDOC Week, a number of indigenous students and some of our school leaders will be going into mass today at St Joseph’s Church, North Mackay. As we embrace NAIDOC week, we must take the time to remember the history and culture of our beautiful country, Australia. It is important to note that NAIDOC Week does not mean that we only celebrate and recognize our past for one week in a year. As you would suspect, nothing would ever be achieved if we did this. This must be integrated and incorporated into all that we do as it does not stand in isolation. Through the sharing and passing down of stories, we gain an appreciation and knowledge, as we acknowledge and develop an understanding of the past and move towards a better future.
The Good News

Sunday's Gospel Reflection - Mark 6:30-34
Jesus pities the crowd, sheep without a shepherd
Fifty years ago the word ‘stress’ was only ever applied to materials like steel and the wings of planes. But since then, along with ‘pressure’, it has first crept into our language and more lately become an everyday term. Everyone experiences stress now. You can even hear Grade One students talk about the stress they’re under at school! Perhaps it’s the ever-growing pace of life or an innate competitiveness but pressure and stress have become part of daily life for most people in the so-called civilised world.
Although he may never have used the words ‘stress’ or ‘pressure’, Jesus knew all about the demands of ministry with other people. When the disciples returned from their first efforts away from Jesus he knew that they needed some time out to debrief, to pray and to re-energise themselves. He ordered them all into a boat and they headed for a lonely place where they could be by themselves and rejuvenate.
Jesus recognised the importance of taking time out. If you are engaged in a vocation or ministry that sees you meeting the needs of others, you need some time out to reflect on your experiences; time to hold those people up to God in prayer; time to make sense of your work and the interactions you’ve shared; time to simply recharge your batteries so that you can once again give fully of yourself.
Unfortunately, when Jesus arranged for himself and the disciples to have some time out, the crowd anticipated where they were going and actually beat them there! When the disciples arrived at their lonely spot, they were once again overwhelmed by the crowd.
However, Jesus recognised the demands of the crowd as being more urgent than the demands of the disciples and himself. He took pity on them – he was moved by compassion – and responded to their need.
The Gospel reading shows us that even Jesus and the Apostles needed a break now and then. Yet people kept coming to them. But even when he was tired, Jesus, like a good shepherd, had compassion for those who were in need. He saw the people as sheep without a shepherd, as in the first reading.

Challenge Cup 2021
From the 14th to the 16th of July, 22 St. Anne’s students and 4 students from Mackillop Catholic Primary School, travelled to Yeppoon to represent our school in netball and rugby league in the annual Rockhampton Diocese Catholic Schools Challenge Cup in Yeppoon. This carnival provides a great opportunity for the Catholic school communities to come together, to compete under a sporting banner, to form friendships and build networks.
Despite the wet weather, muddy fields and changes to the timetables, it didn’t stop anyone from joining the team spirit of St Anne’s!
A big thank you to the students who participated. Your positive attitude, sportsmanship and teamwork was great to see!
The carnival would not have run smoothly without the support and assistance of our great parents. Thank you for taking time off and work and being away from your families to support the children.
