From The Principal

Special friends of ours loved tropical palm trees. They had them everywhere; queen palms, golden canes, spindles, red necks, coconuts, royals, christmas palms! You name it they seemed to have it.
They planted them absolutely everywhere!
Then, every holiday period they were forced to hold ritual trimming, hacking and removal ceremonies for these most gracious of God’s living sculptures.
It was hot, heavy, sweaty work and they had to work together as a family for this challenging task to be completed successfully.
Their tropical garden looked tremendous, but if left unattended soon turned to shambles. It was only through re-assessment; commitment to regular pruning, removal of dead fronds, fertilisation and weekly watering that nature was able to flourish.
Palm Sunday and Holy Week speak to me about the same things – challenge, re-assessment of spirituality, commitment to regular Church attendance, removal of dead wood and being open to God’s possibilities for growth and change.
It is then that new life is able to bud and blossom.
For Jesus, what began as a triumphant palm-filled entry into Jerusalem ended in an episode of apparent devastating loneliness. And yet, in the divine plan it was through this very experience that God chose to bring about the salvation of the world and new life. This Palm Sunday we heard the 'Passion' – the suffering and the death of Jesus – the greatest challenge for us to emulate.
As we move into Holy Week, are we willing to allow our faith commitment to bring us towards a new and deeper experience of God's love? Or do we take on the role of bystander and just wave palm branches?
The staff of St Anne's Catholic Primary School extend Easter Blessings to all our families. May you and your extended families be blessed as you celebrate the true meaning of Easter; from the reflection of Good Friday to the joy of Easter Sunday and the promise of eternal life. HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE. Enjoy opening all those choccy eggs and sharing the Easter joy of Christ’s resurrection with your family and friends.
Principal's Messages
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM | From 1 January 2021, the second line of the Australian National Anthem was changed from ‘For we are young and free’ to ‘For we are one and free’.
The Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, said the change was made for all Australians.
“During the past year we have showed once again the indomitable spirit of Australians and the united effort that has always enabled us to prevail as a nation. It is time to ensure this great unity is reflected more fully in our national anthem,” the Prime Minister said.
“Also, while Australia as a modern nation may be relatively young, our country’s story is ancient, as are the stories of the many First Nations peoples whose stewardship we rightly acknowledge and respect. In the spirit of unity, it is only right that we ensure our National Anthem reflects this truth and shared appreciation. Changing ‘young and free’ to ‘one and free’ takes nothing away, but I believe it adds much.”

In time, the signs in the undercovered area and in the hall will reflect this.

Yuwi Custodians Visit

Recently St Anne’s had some special visitors speaking to staff and students. Ms Deb Clark, Ms Sharnie Rigby and Mr Malakai Russell-Baira-Napatali, all Yuibera descendants shared some of their cultural knowledge around languages and the importance of protocols. We looked at some spaces around the school that have been identified for future projects. Our Indigenous students also met with this team and got to learn some new words and make connections with the Yuibera descendants.
We are so blessed to have these people come and visit us and we hope that they return soon.

NAPLAN Practice Test
Our NAPLAN practice test was scheduled for Tuesday, March 23, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it was moved. So, Friday of last week, our Year 3 and Year 5 students sat their practice NAPLAN test. Year 3 students completed an Omnibus test, which is a mixture of reading, grammar, punctuation and mathematics, and Year 5 students completed an Omnibus and an online writing task. Mrs Eames, Mr Frost, Mr Presley, Mrs Campbell and I were all impressed with how well prepared our students were, how well they navigated the online tools such as a ruler, and how far our Year 5 word-processing skills have come. The success that was witnessed last Friday is true testament to the passion and care our teachers have when preparing our students for such events. Job well done to both the teaching team and the student body. We are very proud of our Year 3 and 5 students!
Thank you Aurizon!
Earlier this term, Aurizon donated to our gardening 'Green Team' some new safety gardening gloves to use when we start up our gardening projects again - definitely once the weather is a bit cooler! Thank you, Aurizon! These gloves will keep us safe in the veggie patch!

The Good News

What is Holy Week?
The events of Holy Week, which commence on Palm Sunday, recount the last week of Jesus' life, and are the last week of Lent. On Palm Sunday the Catholic Church celebrates Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem on a donkey.
During the days leading up to Holy Thursday Jesus cleanses the Temple and argues with the Jewish religious authorities, actions which result in their decision to have Jesus killed. On Holy Thursday the Catholic Church celebrates the institution of the Eucharist, and recounts the washing of the disciples' feet, the prayer and arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
On Good Friday the Catholic Church commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus, and the placement of his body in a tomb. On Holy Saturday Christians reflect on the events of Good Friday.

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Mark 15:1-39
In the reading of the Passion, we walk with Jesus through his suffering and death. It is draining, not so much because it is long, but more so because of the strong feelings it stirs within us.
Here is a brief outline of the chain of events:
Jesus breaks the bread of his body and shares the wine of his blood at his last Passover meal with his friends.
He struggles with his fate as he prays in the garden and then is abandoned by the disciples closest to him. One of them betrays Jesus to the authorities.
Another one of his closest friends, Peter, saves himself by denying Jesus not once, but three times.
Although earlier a crowd had followed Jesus through the streets with palms, singing his praises, now another crowd rejects him in favour of a criminal.
When charged with being the King of the Jews, Jesus gives no defence and is sentenced to death.
After Jesus has suffered terrible beatings, Simon of Cyrene carries Jesus’ cross to the place of death.
Jesus is nailed to the cross like a common criminal.
After the agony of his death, he is buried in someone else’s tomb.
Jesus was in great agony and torture. He felt so alone, he even thought God had forsaken him.
Have you ever been so upset, and in such pain, that you, like Jesus, felt as if God had forgotten you?
As children, we learned that Jesus died for our sins.
What does that really mean?
Why did Jesus have to die?
Do you believe that Jesus dies again, every day, with the innocent victims of tragedy all over the world?

Easter Liturgy & Stations of The Cross
This is just a reminder that you are invited to our Easter Liturgy and Stations of The Cross on Thursday 1 April commencing at 9.00am. This will retrace the footsteps Jesus took from Palm Sunday through to his death.
Each class will perform a ‘freeze’ to depict the Stations of The Cross they have been assigned. All classes will be participating in this. It is hoped that students will wear the style of clothing from the time of Jesus. Students may wear a plain white t-shirt with their school shorts if parents can't source the style of clothing ideas that were recently sent home via a note.
Due to COVID-19 and continuing impacts we will have to limit the number of adults attending the above liturgy. Please register your intention to attend by hitting the below link and filling out the form. A copy of your responses will be sent to you. At this stage we have a hall limit of 72 therefore only parents (not grandparent, aunts, uncles or other extended family members) can attend.

Student Leadership
Newsletter Report By Renae | This last week has been raining a lot so it has been very wet and there has not been much play outside. But thanks to the teachers who have let us play fun games in the hall, like stuck in the mud and line tiggy. When people got out in the games, they didn't argue which was good to see.
Leadership is a quality that all students of St Anne's Catholic Primary School are encouraged and supported to develop. These experiences ensure that students perceive themselves as leaders and have the opportunity and confidence to take on leadership roles and find their voice.
