BEYOND BOREDOM | We watch the Olympic athletes in awe. The years upon years of
commitment to their craft, the sacrifice in time, and the physical pain they endure, all
impress us. But the thing that amazes me is the level of boredom they must endure. Think
of Nicola Olyslagers – run and jump, run after jump for years to ultimately gain the Silver
Medal in the High Jump. It must have been so boring at times…but then, beyond the
boredom, she learnt to notice the little things. She had a notebook in which she assessed
every jump. Beyond the boredom, she gained a sensitivity to what she was doing and was
able to try out new, small changes that lead to success.
Boredom is a part of success in nearly every human endeavour, including our relationships.
At some stage, a couple has to put aside being lovey-dovey to each other and work out who
unpacks the dishwater, services the car and together they need to balance the credit card.
Boring that may be but these are ways of showing love, true grounded love. In parenting – the
cuddles are marvellous but then there is the toddler who loves ‘No’, the nights up with a sick
child, the surly teenager who takes us past our patience. Beyond the boredom, we discover the
myriad of ways of showing love that we would never have thought possible.
So too in prayer. When God feels close, it is so easy. But often God doesn’t feel close. Take
going to Mass, for example. This can feel hum drum, even boring. God could put on a show,
but God doesn’t. Rather by going time and again, we move, beyond the boredom, into a
different part of ourselves – a spiritual level that senses God’s presence and that gains
contentment just by being there in a time of prayer, with others. Beyond boredom, we can
discover the Spirit is leading us into a deeper calmer way of being in love with God.
Loving Father, give me the patience to be still and know that you are God, even in and
through the boring challenges of my life. I ask this in Jesus’ name, confident that you will
hear me.

SCHOOL CHOIR
On Wednesday the 7th of August students from St Anne’s joined a number of schools at the New Life Mackay Church for their Eisteddfod performance.
Our students sang beautifully, and received a silver choral singing award. Thank you to Miss Rice, Mrs Fitzpatrick (for organising our pianist, Nicole Thompson) and parents for your support in transporting your child to their outstanding performance.
A NOTE FROM CHARLOTTE AND CHRIS (YEAR 5R)
On Wednesday St Anne's Choir went to New Life Church for the Mackay Eisteddfod Choir. We sang 2 songs, the first song was called 'Kookaburra' and the second song was, 'Hobble Gobble'. Our Choir had so much fun! We came second out of our section. We would like it if we could have more people in our choir. Our teacher is Miss Rice.
If you like Music, this might be your thing! You should come down! We do choir on Wednesday first lunch. It's in the Year 5 Classroom.😃🎼🎵🎶

ICAS
Wishing the students participating in ICAS testing over the coming weeks the very best of luck. We have students participating in English, Writing, Spelling Bee and Mathematics. Good luck and enjoy the experience.

SPLATS
Splats are a great interactive number talk that can be used across a wide range of year levels.
The goal is to work on subitizing & counting skills, parts of a whole and to encourage mathematical conversation.
Time to figure out the missing part covered by the splat... don't forget to explain your thinking!
How do you know?
How might you draw the number underneath the splat?
