THE STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES | I heard a person talking about the situation in the Middle East. He said it didn’t need to be like this, as there actually is enough land to go round, enough water and other resources. The problem comes from the stories that the different parties tell themselves. ‘We can’t live with them’, ‘they won’t offer peace…etc’. Some parts are possibly true, many aren’t.
That lead me to think about the stories we tell ourselves. Many we have picked up from others, some we have fabricated ourselves. These can be for good or for bad in our lives. I know I was hampered by stories told about me in my family – my older brother was to be the one to shine academically, but I was also encouraged by other stories –that I was a good cook. Each of us has a similar experience. Looking at those stories, we could say some were true, some weren’t. Most stories in our families are a mixture of both truth and falsity. And our understanding changes over time. I look back on things that happened in my childhood and now find I have a different understanding: we can only go so far in getting to the truth of our stories.
So, I asked myself, is there any story we can trust and trust completely. And there is. I think only one: that God loves us, each of us, here, each person you encounter with an infinite love. Jesus has said, ‘as the Father has loved me so I have loved you’. Now this is a story we really struggle with. It is so amazing, so divine that we can’t get our heads or our hearts around it. Yet it is the best story for us. With its wisdom, we can treat ourselves well and all the people we encounter. When I look at some people and am tempted to label them a ‘no-hoper’, I try to stop myself and think, God loves them as much as God loves me, and there is a divine plan working itself out in that person’s life. God may take their whole life to bring them to hope but God loves them as much as God loves me. And that love is beyond my imagining but it is the Truth to live by, the best story we have.
Loving God, let me believe in the immensity of love you have for me. May that love colour all the stories I tell myself about myself and other people. I ask this in Jesus’ name, confident that you will hear me.
