From The Principal
The ANZAC tradition - the ideals of courage, endurance and mateship that are still relevant today was established on 25 April 1915 when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. It was the start of a campaign that lasted eight months and resulted in some 25,000 Australian casualties, including 8,700 who were killed or died of wounds or disease.
The men who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula created a legend, adding the word ‘ANZAC’ to the Australian and New Zealand vocabularies and creating the notion of the ANZAC spirit.
In 1916, the first anniversary of the landing was observed in Australia, New Zealand and England and by troops in Egypt. That year, 25 April was officially named ‘ANZAC Day’ by the Acting Prime Minister, George Pearce. By the 1920s, ANZAC Day ceremonies were held throughout Australia. All States had designated ANZAC Day as a public holiday. Commemoration of ANZAC Day continued throughout the 1930s and 1940s with World War II veterans joining parades around the country. In the ensuing decades returned servicemen and women from the conflicts in Malaya, Indonesia, Korea and Vietnam, veterans from allied countries and peacekeepers joined the parades.
During the 1960s and 1970s the number of people attending ANZAC Day marches fell as Australians questioned the relevance of ANZAC Day. However, in the 1990s there was a resurgence of interest in ANZAC Day, with attendances, particularly by young people, increasing across Australia and with many making the pilgrimage to the Gallipoli Peninsula to attend the Dawn Service.
ANZAC DAY is a commemoration, not a celebration. It is a time for recognition and remembrance of the sacrifices made by all those who have served Australia in time of conflict or who currently serve in the Defence Forces. It is a time to reaffirm a resolve to seek peace rather than war. This latter point has seen a resurgence of interest in Anzac Day, particularly by young Australians.
Thank you to the many members of the St Anne’s Community who are part of this resurgence of interest around ANZAC Day; whether with us or another organisation.

READING
Let’s talk about reading…
One of our School Improvement Priorities at St Anne’s is to enhance the learning growth of students in reading.
How are we planning to do this? The first step is to increase the reading volume. Last week, details were provided on how to log into SORA, an online library providing access to ebooks and audiobooks.
Another great resource for lower years is SPELD SA Phonic Readers, these are free and able to be accessed online (or printed). When learning to read, it is important to consolidate letter-sound knowledge and practise this skill using decodable readers. After this, students will be exposed to a variety of texts, this will improve their decoding skills and gradually build knowledge of high frequency words.

ESTI MYSTERY
An ESTI mystery is a fantastic way to engage students at the beginning of the lesson.
Each image invites students to wonder what number is represented by the image. As you work through each Esti-Mystery, clues will appear that will allow the students to use math concepts to narrow the set of possibilities to a small set of numbers.
Have a chat with your child and discuss the possible answers to the below ESTI Mystery.

Drumroll please......

The Good News
From the Assistant Principal: Religious Education
Ms Georgia Moloney
St Anne’s Monthly Family Mass at St Michael’s Church
This coming Sunday, Year 6 have been invited to assist at the 9am St Michael’s Mass with prayers and readings for the St Anne’s Family Mass.
I would be very appreciative of support from the students. Could you please let me know via email to georgia_moloney@rok.catholic.edu.au or contact 0439142409, as soon as possible, if your child would be able to attend and assist. I have the prayers and readings to practise with the students if they are able to assist.
All families are invited to attend, even if it is your first time or it has been a long time since you last went to Mass, it would be lovely to see you there.
ANZAC Day Liturgy
The St Anne’s community is invited to join us at 12 noon on Wednesday 24th of April at 12 noon in the Hall for our ANZAC Day liturgy led by Year 5.
ANZAC Day is a day when Australians and New Zealanders remember and honour those who fought and died for freedom. We gather not to glorify war but to remember those who have served our country during times of crisis and to reflect upon their selfless sacrifice. Conscious that there are many men and women around the world still working for peace, we hold fast to the powerful hope that peace can exist today.
ANZAC Day prayer:
Loving God, we pray for all who demonstrate love and peace in our world. May we learn from the past and strive to spread the message of Jesus’ love throughout our earth. We ask for the gift of peace in the depth of our hearts, through Jesus Christ, Amen.
